What Is That?

Tuesday, my dad was standing in the house, looking out the sliding-glass door and he said, "What is that hanging from the chicken pen?" And we all ran over to the door to look. Mom thought is was a duck. I thought it was probably just some trash. So, my dad went out there to investigate, and me being the curious girl I am, I followed him. You'll never guess what it was...
A HAWK!!!
He found his way into the chicken pen and was trying to eat the chickens. Well, they were attacking him and hurting him, so when he wanted to rest, he'd fly over and hang on the side of the pen and he looked like this...
Then, he got brave enough to get on the ground and they attacked him again. I took this picture just before dad opened the door to the pen and he flew out. Hawks are very pretty creatures, but not when they try to eat your chickens!

My dad was very upset that the hawk got in there and he ran to get the gun, but we reminded him that it's illegal to shoot a hawk. The only other thing to do was to carefully open the door to the pen and let him fly out. Now, that was a very dangerous procedure because Hawks may look cute and cuddly, but they will attack you if you get near them. So mom was a little worried about dad opening the door, but the Hawk waited for dad to get out of the way and then immediately flew out and over into the trees. Thank goodness our "ladies" (my dad's term for our hens) weren't hurt!

Wow! That's one large hawk. I'm glad you discovered him before he did anymore damage.

Oh yes, he was big! I'm glad we got him before he hurt the chickens, too! Thank you for the comment, Elizabeth J!

LOL, our hens would kill a hawk if it tried anything. So glad your Girls are OK! So purty.

Wow! Once there was a hawk on my fence and I got really close to it... I'm glad it didn't do anything to your chickens!

I know. Our "laides" almost killed him. They injured one of his legs. But he'll be fine. He still has one left. :)

That's so cool! This is the first time I've seen a hawk up close. I've had a buzard fly right over my head. I mean, he flew so close I felt the wind from his wings. It was cool!

Glad your 'ladies are okay! I've raised chickens before, and I know they can get pretty feisty when somethings trying to eat them!

He's just a lil guy isn't he? :) Is that as big as they get where you live? Or is he not full grown yet?
He's got a beautiful face too; so much expression. He would make an awesome painting!

Actually, he's bigger than he looks. He was about as long as your arm from your elbow down, but he was kinda skinny for a hawk. That must be why he wanted some chicken for dinner. LOL =D
